A good introduction to major themes

I am using this book as the textbook for my Chinese Linguistics course. I found it very accessible to students who have no linguistics background at all. The introduction is "jargon-free" and fun. It is a good way to introduce the Chinese language and culture to students who have not studied Chinese or who have had very little Chinese training. But for students who have had at least a year's worth of Chinese classes, some of the chapters seem not enough for them. Such students probably benefit more from materials that are more in-depth. But for the targeted readership of this book, it is very well written and engaging. So I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing the structure, the writing system and history of the Chinese language.

Concise, clearly written. Very good linguistic analysis and it includes the characters with the examples. It helps if you have some background with Chinese if you want to get the full benefit of the book.

Best avoid

If you do not have an in-depth knowledge of Chinese linguistics and are looking to learn about it, I can see how this text would satisfy your quest for knowledge, it however will only do so superficially and not give you a clear, accurate, up-to-date or scientific view of the field which can still be done in a simple and readable manner without the many basic errors in this book. If you don't know the subject, then you will be blind to the many faults of this text which is highly problematic. There is obviously plenty of basic information that is perfectly acceptable, but it contains a myriad of informational errors and analytical flaws not to mention writing and grammar issues in English. One assumes that these things are peer reviewed, but it doesn't appear to have been reviewed by more than one other person who likely knows little of the subject and yet didn't even manage to catch writing errors. If you actually want more than a perfunctory understanding of Chinese linguistics do not let this text pollute your understanding of the subject.

Disappointed. I thought it would be a book of the collection

I had quite a time getting my hands on this book. I finally did so, at my local library, and was able to cancel my Amazon order for it. Unfortunately, there almost are more photos in this book of Chanel jewelry, makeup and perfume than fashion (I may be exaggerating, but not by much). I thought the title implied, with the use of the word collection, that it would be about the runway collection. I was not that fascinated with the history of the buttons, although that was interesting. I was hoping that the book would be about the runway collection through the years. I would have loved to have seen more photos during the time of Coco's reign or even Karl's collections through the years. Chanel is my absolute favorite luxury brand and I was hoping for perhaps some of the accessories (leather goods, purses, even things like tennis rackets and ski goggles, maybe the shoes). It is a lovely book, just not what I thought it would be... If you are looking for the RUNWAY COLLECTION, this isn't it.

A sumptuous feast for Chanel Lovers and Fashionistas

I have all of the biographies, novels and museum exhibition books published about Chanel in the past twenty years. This new book is a treat for both Chanel lovers and fashionistas.

Author Daniele Bott takes five central themes - the suit, the camellia, jewelry, fragrances, make-up and the LBD (little black dress) and sends us on a journey from the first showing of each item through its many reincarnations. You see how many times designers and the Chanel House itself has re-imaged Chanel creations from over a century ago.

There are over 159 illustrations - 101 of them in color. Many of the photographs have never been seen before and were taken by the greatest names in fashion photography.

My favorite two page spread features a display of the different Chanel buttons used on suits over the years. Another features Chanel fitting Ingrid Bergman in her Chanel suit for a scene in Tea and Sympathy. There are pictures of her original make-up packaging (Chanel thought about travel sizes in make-up long before anyone else), and her push up lipstick created in 1926. Imagine a 2-page spread sea of red Chanel lipsticks or an exclusive, entirely hand crafted logo makeup brush with 16,000 silk strands and the double C logo in the middle.

Chanel was famous for mixing costume jewelry with the real thing and costume jewelry designers (most notably Joan Rivers) have made their fortunes with variations of her original Maltese cross and faux pearl designs.

Every single photo exudes the Chanel style of understated elegance and luxury. For over a century, CoCo Chanel and now Karl Lagerfeld have kept the look and its history alive. This book carries on that tradition.

About the Author
David Brown practices law in the Monterey, California area, where he has represented both landlords and tenants in hundreds of court cases -- most of which he felt could have been avoided if both sides were more fully informed about landlord/tenant law. Brown, a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Santa Clara Law School, also teaches law at the Monterey College of Law and is the author of Fight Your Ticket in California, Beat Your Ticket and others.

Ralph Warner, a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1971. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

Janet Portman specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law. She is the author or coauthor of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book: Rights and Responsibilities and others. Worth every penny! Had to evict a tennat, had all the right forms for the original contract. Helped know the process, was able to have them out in 43 days! CA eviction process is a minefield of mistakes if you don't know what you are doing.

good intro to spanish literature

I am currently reading this book for a Spanish class, and the novels are very entertaining. I found myself reading ahead just because the story was so compelling. Each is a story about a rite of passage, and the reading level is good for intermediate to advanced students. I have been studying Spanish for almost 8 years and had no difficulty with the language of the book. I highly recommend this for a quick, interesting read, possibly for brushing up on Spanish.

About the Author

W. F. Chen teaches at Purdue University and serves on the SSRC Executive Committee and the AISC Committee on Specifications. He has been chairman of several ASCE committees; has authored and co-authored several textbooks and monographs; and is the recipient of seven professional awards.

 

E. M. Lui currently teaches at Syracuse University. He is a member of the AISC, the ACI, and the AAM; has published several papers on structural stability; and is the 1986 recipient of the Outstanding Young Man of America Award.

Excellent book on buckling of structures

I used this book to prepare for exams in a graduate course in buckling. I highly recommend it to graduate students in structural engineering. Lots of details on methods used to determine buckling loads. A bit weak on computer methods, but those can be found in Chen's book on semi-rigid frames.

Very good explanations for LRFD equations

This book is a must in order to understand how the equations in the AISC LRFD specifications were developed. The book is easy to understand (only basic mechanics of materials, some calculus and ordinary differential equations background is required).

Very theoretical

The book itself is very theoretical, but my biggest qualm is that the text has very few examples and does a poor job of explaining some of the finer details. There are practice problems for each chapter and if all you had was this book, you'd never be able to answer them.
