Real Java for the real world - an all around good book.

I've read many books on Java, and they're all the same cr*p. For a small work, this book certainly packs some punch. It touches upon many interesting topics, such as MVC frameworks, Java for networking, and even Java3D! It is worded in a way which enables the reader to easily map what they read into a conceptual thought.

Incredibly Information-Dense but Clear

I picked this book up as an impulse buy the last time I went book browsing in the physical world. It was one of the better purchases I made that day; I've been so impressed that I came here to search for more books by the same author.
The content level of Key Java is head and shoulders above most java books. Those few books with comparable content usually fail in some other dimension (clarity, accessibility, brevity, completeness, non-trivial examples). The writing style is a bit dry and academic, but the author is obviously no stranger to serious programming.
Many java books are filled with either relentlessly detailed - but not informative - examination of the topic, or with smoothly written but empty prose. Key Java's chapters are excellently written for "I need it NOW" reading, and each one clearly explains the topic, both in concept and in practice. I won't say you'll be able to read through a chapter and become a master of the topic; some of these topics are seriously complex and take some measure of mulling over and contemplation. But invariably, in the past, when I've tackled a new concept in Java, I've had to read the same topic in five or more different books to get the complete picture. This is not the case with _Key Java_.
This book easily makes it into my top five favorite java books, and is contending with a few others (Bruce Eckel's _Thinking In Java_, etc) for the #1 position. However, Key Java's approach and nuts 'n bolts discussions of advanced-but-not-theoretical java topics make it much more of a complementary book than a competitor, a fine addition to any java bookshelf.
One thing I'm particularly happy about is the form factor of the book - too many java books are tomes that risk breaking your wrist (or your foot if you drop it). There's a prevailing mindset in technical book publishing that the thicker the book, the better (the thicker the spine, the more bookstore shelf real estate you get for your book to advertise itself). Key Java is concise and focused, and the form factor reflects that; I carried it around in my large coat pocket to read as the mood struck me for a couple of weeks.

Just Buy It

This is one of the very, very few Java books on the market that will give you any new insight into using the language. In a very small space, it provides an amazing amount of detail - at both the low implementation level and the high architectural level. The chapters on memory and speed optimization alone make it worth the price. This book manages to say a lot with very few words. It runs completely against the grain of all the wordy, useless, and incorrect Java books out there, and every serious Java programmer should own it.

Very Disappointed

I ordered this book because I was very excited about a book that I thought would explain mechanisms of signs often not given in most books we use like Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History-Taking (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)) or Hutchison's Clinical Methods: An Integrated Approach to Clinical Practice With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 23e (Hutchinson's Clinical Methods). I have been trained in the British system (MBBS) and we are usually taught hundreds of signs without explanation. I saw that book was written by MBBS doctors and I assumed it would give a much more in depth explanation because of the focus our system puts on physical diagnosis. But most of the explanations in this book are only a few sentences and mostly common sense. Even description of the signs themselves are not very well presented. The differentials given for each sign very limited (for example hepatomegaly just four differentials written) In fact good portion of the book is blank. Often the text takes up like half or less of the page and rest is left blank. I feel the following two books are much much better buys: Evidence-Based Physical Diagnosis: Expert Consult - Online and Print, 3e and Physical Diagnosis Secrets: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 2e

Mechanism of Clinical Signs - review

I have just started GP training and have found this book very useful. I love that I can examine a patient in general practice and then look in my clinical signs textbook to review a description of the sign and conditions associated with it. I have also found the mechanisms to be very clear and comprehensive and they are a great way to link clinical and academic medicine when teaching.

I would recommend this book to anyone like me who is working in general practice. Teachers and medical students would also find this textbook particularly useful.

Great for learning and review

It was tough returning to medicine from maternity leave but this book made it easier. I re-read some of my old med-school notes and some clinical examination books, but this new book is helping me to put together things a bit faster. I actually wish I had it when I was learning how to examine.

It is set out system by system and alphabetically. You could read each chapter from start to finish, but it probably lends it self to quickly looking up a signs you see or have momentarily forgotten why it occurs. It also has two table of contents: once is just by the system and the name of the signs in alphabetical order and the other has the signs categorised under a disorder that may cause multiple signs. e.g. "Cushings disease" has moon facies, stria, proximal myopathy etc etc listed under it.

The neurological chapter is extremely comprehensive but manageable.
Overall I think this is a very handy book to have for medical students learning. It may also help some of the doctors in different specialty training.

Get to the other side by going right through it....

In the summer of 2014, out of the clear blue sky, I had my first panic attack on an a flight from Atlanta to Chattanooga, TN. Fortunately, I was able to exit the airplane before takeoff, but began to spin rapidly downward into a world of which I had no understanding - in fact, completely bewildered, scared, and depressed. Most people have no idea what's happening when they have a panic attack, and I was no different. After seeing my GP (who diagnosed it immediately), I scheduled 6 sessions with a well-meaning but relatively ineffective counselor who recommended relaxation techniques that were only mildly effective. I was in a season of job change, and this was going to effect it radically, as I was heading back into consulting with consistent travel, meetings, interactions, etc. Panic and anxiety was exploding into agoraphobia, to the point that I couldn't go to the back of my local grocery or club store without feeling the walls closing in on my life. I was in prison.

Only by the grace of God did I stumble upon Barry McDonagh and the Panic Away program. I consumed every ounce of his information, and began to practice his techniques: 1. Say "so what is the worst that can happen?" 2. Fully and completely accept and allow the discomfort (NOT DANGER) or anxious feelings and thoughts 3. Face it down - dare it to do its worst and 4. Engage in another activity - dwell in the moment to reacclimate the brain.

Unlike many other programs, Barry's counter-intuitive approach of addressing our fears and anxiety head on forced me to deal with discomfort in a new way, and to prove to myself that I could push through anxiety and stretch out my boundaries. Anxiety is no longer something from which to "be cured," rather, it's a condition that I'm learning to welcome and live with, converting anxiety into excitement. Barry's approach is warm, intelligent, common sensical, and effective. No matter if you're a newbie like me, or have dealt with this for years, there's life change in this book.

I am a physician who has battled with anxiety for decades. This is the most helpful book, professional therapy or medication I have ever experienced. It is an amazing book full of wisdom, insight and practical tools that you can use to help free yourself from your anxiety. I have listened to the audio book MANY times in the months since I obtained it on the Indiegogo campaign before the public launch. (The audio book is now available at [...] if you buy the book on Amazon.) It has made a tremendous difference in my life. I understand my anxiety issues better, my anxiety levels have dropped significantly and I know how to deal with them. I am a religious person. This is the first non-scripture book for which I have thanked God in prayer. In all sincerity I recommend this book without reservation for anyone with any anxiety, worry, obsessive-compulsive, or panic disorder. STUDY this book! Read it over and over and glean a great perspective, obtain great tools and bless your life with the ability to treat (not manage) your anxiety!

The One I've Waited 20 Years For

As someone who has suffered with severe anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia for nearly 20 years, this is the first review I've ever written for an aid in the disorder. I would encourage sufferers to give it a chance. I have felt hopeless, like nothing would ever work for me. I've tried so many things over the years with no success. This book has given me a completely different outlook and I am making real progress for the first time. Read it. Listen to the audio book, download the free app. This is good stuff.

A much improved reference for those interested in the legal process

"Introduction to the American Legal System" is frequently used at the university level and in paralegal training courses as it gives a good overview of the legal system and how it operates with brief synopsis of the Criminal Justice System, Civil Law, Legal Ethics, Legal Research, and Federal Courts, delving into all areas of the law. What sets the Eighth Edition apart from earlier versions is the inclusion of much overdue passages touching on international law and military law that are especially timely in our post-9/11 world. As before, it includes a glossary of terms and the Constitution of the United States, which is a handy reference. That this book has gone through so many editions speaks to its utility in a number of courses relating to the law, yet it is written in a manner that is easily understandable by the lay reader seeking a better understanding of the law. While it's not a lively read it delivers what most are seeking; a better understanding and grasp of our legal system.

An enjoyable read

It's rare, in my mind, to find novels based off RTS or 4x games, especially since the standard model of story for games in such genres tends towards excuse plots and basic outlines in terms of factions.

Which is part of why this novel is such a joy to read. Arinn Dembo takes what amounts of basically nothing and weaves a complex, breathing universe out of it.

The only things that prevent me from giving this book five stars is that, throughout the book the main character uses latin, and uses it a lot. While translations are provided in the back of the book, the lack of in-text translation, I feel, distracts the reader from the story, and it's used so heavily at times it's difficult to understand what's going on.

The other main reason I'm giving this four stars is that in a lot of ways the plot feels unresolved. There's mysteries set up in the beginning such as (spoiler) who's screwing around with the FTL array, and oddly they're solved in that we know who's behind them or causing them, but never resolved; the villain is free.

It's not that the villain is free that bothers me, what bothers me is that he doesn't get away with it due to escaping, or because he's still hidden or whatever, he gets away with it because the book ends before anything is done. In other words, the ending is very abrupt, and more importantly it doesn't feel like a sequel hook.

The Deacon's Tale is a great Science Fiction Space Opera following Commander Cai Rui of Sol Force.
Tasked with archiving and investigating the many mysterious and unknown encounters throughout known space,
Cai Rui already knows how dangerous and important his job is.
As a new threat emerges, however, he will face an enemy that can take everything he knows and loves.

Starting at a mellow pace, the story eases readers unfamiliar with 'The Sword of the Stars' into the Universe of the story.
Intrigues as more questions than answers are unraveled before Cai Rui, then excites in the final confrontation.

For those who are familiar with 'The Sword of the Stars', it will be a revealing look into the lives and times of the Universe.
Without taking from the intrigue or excitment.

The book also offers a 51 page appendix of lore surrounding the Universe as it pertains to the book.

I enjoyed the book immensely, and am looking forward to more.

A good introduction to the SOTS universe

This novel elaborates upon the nature of the new race in the Sword of the Stars universe, the self evolved Zuul. Having read the other entries in the world building, there was nothing in the book that was confusing or new. It is a different presentation than what people might get from just playing the strategy game. In my view, it really puts people in the role of the Zuul and explains their motivations as well as the motivations of the various different political entities in the universe, far better than a passive presentation.

For those that love the game and the universe, this is a must read. For those that are not fans of the SOTS universe, this is a good introduction. If you like this book, you'll also want to read the other entries about the various races and the various histories behind it all.

About the Author
Arnold J. Goldman is an attorney with the firm of Goldman and Goldman, in Rochester, New York. In addition to practicing law, he has taught courses in constitutional law at the University of Rochester and has been a guest lecturer in several schools in the Rochester area.

William D. Sigismond is Director of Experiential and Adult Learning and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Business Administration at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York. He has taught business law at both the high school and college levels for over 35 years and is a member and past president of the New York State Business Educator's Association, as well as a member of many other professional organizations. A certified arbitrator, he has handled a range of cases for the American Arbitration Association and the Better Business Bureau.

Business law book not good shape

Not in a good shape. Looks like some water damage. Writing in book makes hard to read the sentence it covers. Food pieces on some pages. It will do but could have been in better shape

If you have to buy this for a class, I hope your teacher is really good

I can't believe I had to buy this new edition for the second half of my business law class. Not only were there typos and errors everywhere, some of the actual material was wrong. It is poorly organized, poorly edited and too dumbed down. If this is your assigned book, petition to have a different text selected for your class. Thank goodness I had an excellent professor.

Need it for college class, damn book is expensive !!!! Books is simple and well organized. Questions at the end of chapter is a bit stupid since I ran into questions that are not covered that particular chapter, good thing those are "opinion" questions, and there's always google to get you out of a jam. Soft cover... books are so floppy..... All key terms are defined for you on the side. Makes studying a lot easier.
