Historical fiction at its very best
By Robert Moore
In the nineteenth century the historical novel enjoyed the highest possible esteem. William Thackery's historical fiction HENRY ESMOND and not VANITY FAIR was regarded by his contemporaries as his finest work, and it was routine for writers like Dickens in A TALE OF TWO CITIES and Tolstoy in WAR AND PEACE to write novels set in a different historical period. In the twentieth century, however, as novelists began more often to fictionalize their own experiences and focus on the psychological make up of their characters and historian forged a more rigorously scientific form of historical research, historical fiction suffered a sharp decrease in critical respect. To be sure, there were exceptions, whether Robert Graves writing about the Roman emperors in I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD or in Patrick O'Brian's superb series of novels about the Royal Navy at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. But these were exceptions and not the rule and even O'Brian garnered less respect than he would have in the 19th century. All of this is to explain why Gore Vidal's superb series of novels that he calls Narratives of Empire have failed to achieve as much acclaim, as they deserve.

LINCOLN is in essence exceptionally accurate history encapsulated in the form of a novel. I have read a spate of books on Lincoln and the Civil War and I was almost never able to fault his scholarship. In a note following the conclusion of the novel he indicates that the manuscript was seen--and corrected--by no less an authority on Lincoln than David Herbert Donald, who is arguably the supreme authority on Lincoln of this age. But accuracy would be an empty thing if the narrative were not enlivened by Vidal's remarkable skills as a writer. He has a fascinating style, moving without transition from a scene with one group of characters at one point of time in one paragraph to another group at another time in the next. The narrative fairly races along.

This is not a novelistic retelling of the entirety of Lincoln's life, but focuses instead exclusively on the period of his presidency. The story begins with Lincoln's arrival in Washington and ends shortly after his assassination. In fact, the subject matter is almost precisely the same as that covered by Doris Kearns Goodwin in her new book TEAM OF RIVALS: THE POLITICAL GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. The story Vidal wants to highlight is how Lincoln managed to hold together the Union despite widespread opposition to the War in the North and a cabinet that on the one hand imagined him to be a weak leader whom they could easily control and on the other filled with individuals who possessed presidential aspirations of their own. Interestingly, the two finest demonstrations of Lincoln's leadership skills come not from the work of historians, but by novelists: Vidal here and Shelby Foote in his depiction of Lincoln's extraordinary skills in his three-volume THE CIVIL WAR.

Though he is astonishingly faithful to the historical record, Vidal's greatest achievement is bringing to life in credible fashion a number of remarkable personalities in ways that are consistent with the historical record. In reading about the war, I had of course read about Seward and Chase, but neither truly emerged as vivid personalities before. Perhaps their biographers would disagree with the portraits Vidal paints, but for me whenever I read about either individual in the future, I will almost certainly do so through eyes of Vidal.

We live in an age that is obsessed with the notion of "political bias," an idea whose importance is, I think, outrageously overstated. One either is faithful to the facts or not and your bias might make you lean one way or another, but it won't allow you to distort the facts unless you are being deliberately dishonest (I think of Ann Coulter's almost macabre depiction of Joseph McCarthy in her writing). But given Vidal's well-known adherence to New Deal ideals, a word or two might be in order. I was surprised at how politically evenhanded this book was. In fact, if anything Vidal mutes the widespread belief of more contemporary Civil War historians that the conflict was overwhelmingly about slavery and instead presents the idea that it was more about states's rights (an idea that has been more and more discredited not merely by folks like James McPherson but Southern historians such as Shelby Foote). Actually, this is Vidal's New Deal point of view coming forth, as previous generations sought to not offend Southern politicians by intimating the war was about the admittedly (today, that is) disgusting institution of slavery, which no one would defend, so much as it was about states's rights, which is, while wrong, not so outrageously indefensible. In the New Deal, the Democratic Party functioned as an uneasy coalition of various groups, including labor, Northern progressives, and Southern populists. With the Nixon strategy, the South has split off from the Democratic party (initially over civil rights issues) and those on the left have been more comfortable in speaking of the Civil War and its causes in more historically accurate terms. I am, by the way, a Southerner, even if I today live in the Land of Lincoln, so I see this issues from both sides.

I recommend this novel in the strongest possible terms. It is not just a very fine novel: it is a great way to internalize history in a way that is rarely as possible in a straightforward historical account. Moreover, it is a richly complex Lincoln that is presented here. In contrast to the blandly hagiographic portrait by Carl Sandburg, this is a warts and all version. Lincoln isn't idealized, but is shown with both his virtues and vices, from his astonishing ability to handle people who imagined that they were handling him, to his self-proclaimed ignorance of financial matters. But he is more the admirable for his portrayal as a believable, flesh and blood human being, instead of mere statue.

The finest political novel by an American writer
By C. Collins
If I could give this book 15 stars, I certainly would. It is the finest political novel by an American writer. It has few rivals, maybe "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God", both by Robert Graves, are as good, but students of history, political science or leadership will find "Lincoln" to be an exception work of literary art.

There are several reasons why I so strongly recommend this book.

First, this novel demonstrates exceptionally well the balance between self interests and loyalty, as exemplified in the Lincoln cabinet. Salmon Chase, the Secretary of the Treasury, and William Seward, the Secretary of State are finely portrayed characters. They both were positioning themselves in the Lincoln presidency to succeed him. This required careful political skills to appear supportive but make every move in regard to self interests. The passages where Lincoln wins over William Seward into a real honest partnership are masterful and my admiration for Seward soared. Salmon Chase on the other hand continues to play a careful game of undermining the President behind his back while playing the loyal servant to his face. The passage where Chase is eventually confronted by Lincoln, who was never fooled in the first place, is a wonderful example of the careful interpersonal chess moves required in political life.

Second, the novel does a wonderful job of demonstrating how difficult it is get someone to follow orders and do the job right. Lincoln remains totally frustrated with his generals, especially the handsome, charming General McClellan, with his own political ambitions. The man refused to engage the enemy. Lincoln eventually fires him and promotes General Grant. Mrs. Lincoln is somewhat scadalized by the Grants, but Lincoln finally has a military genius on his side and Lincoln offers minimal guidance as long as he sees the war turning around due to Grant's initiatives.

Third, the novel does a great job of demonstrating the total hell that Lincoln occupied in the White House. The public came into the public rooms of the White House every morning to try to intercept the President on his way to his office. His wife engaged in questionable kick-back schemes with the White House staff. His older sons went to war and his younger son dies of swamp fever. Mary Lincoln was a burden to the President and her nervous breakdown after the death of their child, Willie, further burdened this exceptional political genius.

Fourth, Lincoln practiced careful adaptive leadership, keeping his cabinet and officers focused on the grim realities they had to face every day without flights of hubris and fancy.

Lincoln held our nation together at its darkest hour. Vidal was able to capture the amazing day to day reality that this feat entailed. Vidal creates a vision of Lincoln that comes to life in this fine novel.

A Novel of Abraham Lincoln
By Robin Friedman
In his 1984 historical novel "Lincoln", Gore Vidal has written with great insight about our sixteenth president, his cabinet, his family, his enemies, and the Civil War Era. Lengthy though the book is, the writing is crisp and eloquent. It held my attention throughout. The book is part of a series of novels by Vidal exploring the history of the United States.

In writing historical novels, it is difficult to tell where fact ends and fiction begins. This is particularly the case in dealing with a complex figure such as Lincoln whose life and political legacy remain controversial and subject to many interpretations. Controversial matters that Vidal addresses in his novel include Lincoln's attitude towards African-Americans and the Reconstruction policy that Lincoln might have pursued if he had lived. Vidal's book shows careful study of Lincoln's life and the Civil War era. He uses the resources uniquely available to the novelist to good advantage by probing the thought processes and feelings of his characters where historical evidence is lacking. I found the portrait of Lincoln compelling, but it is important to remember that Vidal is writing a novel.

Vidal's book begins as the President-elect arrives secretly in Washington, D.C. a few days before his inaugaration to thwart a feared assassination attempt in Baltimore. In the course of the novel, passages of recollection by various characters, reliable and unreliable, cast some light on Lincoln's earlier life. The book moves carefully and slowly, with a great deal of attention given, and properly so, to the earlier period of Lincoln's presidency. Much attention is given to Washington, D.C. at the outset of Lincoln's administration, to attempts to avert the war, to Lincoln's formation of his cabinet, and to preparing the nation for what proved to be a long bloody struggle. The pace of the book picks up as it proceeds through Lincoln's first term and reelection, the end of the Civil War, and the assassination.

The picture of Abraham Lincoln that emerges from Vidal is of a man of great intellect, ambition and will, determined to save the Union at all costs. Vidal portrays Lincoln's overriding dedication to the Union. In order to preserve the Union, Lincoln uses extraordinary and even ruthless political skills. Thus, Vidal's novel considers extensively Lincoln's relationship with his cabinet. Vidal shows Lincoln choosing a cabinet from among his political rivals for the presidency, as well as from loyalist democrats, in order to be all-inclusive in the war effort. Lincoln deals with uncanny skill with potential rivals for the presidency, especially Secretary of State Seward and Secretary of the Treasury Chase. (A recent historical study, "Team of Rivals" by Doris Goodwin also treats Lincoln's relationship to his cabinet at length.) The book also shows Lincoln dealing with similar finesse and force with the Radical Republicans in Congress, with Chief Justice Taney on the Supreme Court, and with his military leaders.

Vidal tells his story through a variety of perspectives. Most of the time, the viewpoint is that of John Hay, one of Lincoln's two secretaries, who had detailed and close access to Lincoln throughout the presidency. Hay and Lincoln's other secretary, Nicholay, together wrote one of the earliest biographies of Lincoln. Vidal also gives the reader a large portrait of the many southern conspirators against Lincoln. In particular Vidal develops the character of a young man named David Herrold, with uncertain purpose in life, who ultimately becomes part of the Booth conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase and his ambitious daughter Kate also receive a large share of attention in Vidal's novel.

For all the attention lavished on him, Lincoln as a man remains an enigma. Lincoln largely kept his own counsel and was not demonstrative in showing his feelings. Thus fleshing-out Lincoln's character offers the novelist a great deal of latitude, and Vidal makes the most of it. His novel focuses on Lincoln's difficult relationship with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, as she spends lavishly, engages herself in political intrigue, and descends to near-madness. The Lincolns endured the death of their young son Willie during the presidency. Vidal properly gives substantial attention to Lincoln's religious views, which became increasing theistic with the prolongation of the Civil War, but never Christian.

Although Gore clearly admires Lincoln and his fortitude in saving the Union, he emphasizes that Lincoln's success came at a high price over and above the loss of blood and treasure in a long bitter war. With his suspension of habeas corpus and supression of dissent, Lincoln expanded forever the power of the Presidency. The war effort changed the character of the United States from an agrarian republic to a centralized, industrial nation. At the end of the book, Vidal puts his own misgivings into the words of John Hay, stationed in France after the assassination.. Hay remarks that "Lincoln, in some mysterious fashion, had willed his own murder as a form of atonement for the great and terrible thing that he had done by giving so bloody and absolute a rebirth to his nation." (p. 657)

"Lincoln" is a thoughtful and moving book for those readers wanting to think about the ideals and political processes of the United States and about Lincoln's role in their continuing development.

Wild Marauders MC: Lynch, by Tory Richards

His life is chaos and danger. Her life is safe and ordinary.

When a prospect kidnaps Kat thinking that she's a doctor, she finds herself under the protection of the club president. Their attraction is instant and hot and it isn't long before they're burning up the sheets. But when she steals his Harley to escape Lynch has no choice but to follow club rules and deal out punishment. Tempers erupt, passions explode, and punishment becomes the sweetest ecstasy!

Excerpt - The woman in question was still on the ground, unwittingly bringing attention to her large tits as she lay on her backside panting. Her wild blonde hair was half-up, half-down, and with a huff she brushed it out of her face and eyes, which were shooting daggers of blue lightning up at us. When my gaze returned to hers, she had enough fury in her eyes to damn me to hell and back. If she recognized me she didn’t show it.

I shouldn’t have, but I smiled.

She got to her feet on her own steam and headed straight for Chicken. “You dumb shit! I couldn't breathe!” It was clear that she was going to hit him, which just wouldn’t do. No one hit a brother, even a prospect, and got away with it. Chicken actually took a step back, producing laughter from Wizard and Tank. It was clear her attack had caught him by surprise. “You could have killed me!”

Just as she raised her hands to hit him I stepped forward and wrapped an arm around her waist hauling her off her feet and back against me. I immediately noticed the difference between her and the skinny whores that hung around club. Thicker waist, curvier hips, and right now her fleshy ass was rubbing against me, and any time I had something this sweet against my dick I got hard.

“Who the hell is in charge here?” she snapped, digging her nails into my arm and struggling wildly, obviously too angry to appreciate her situation. “Kidnapping is against the law, you jerks!” She tried to pull my arm from around her waist, throwing her head back with purpose.

She wasn’t scared, just mad as hell.

Her attempt to head-butt me produced a chuckle from the guys. I was six-foot-six and her head barely reached my chest. There was nothing she could do to hurt me physically, but that didn’t matter. Just the fact that she was trying to hurt me was cause for immediate action. As the president of the club I had a reputation to protect. My crew might be amused at what was happening, but they still expected me to put her in her place and show her who was boss. As she continued to wiggle against me, the clip holding her hair popped open, releasing long, wild hair.

The kind of hair a man could grab a hold of when pounding into her from behind.

Fuck me. Not a vision that I wanted right then.

“Let me go, asshole!”

I had a feeling that her hysterical command was the result of my hard cock. Unless she was dead from the waist down, she had to feel it against her ass. I was harder than a steel rod from her movements, and I’d always liked a woman that looked like a woman, with curves I could sink myself into. Another thing affecting my libido was the way she smelled, clean and fresh. I was used to the smell of cigarettes, booze, and sex on the whores that I slept with.

“Take your filthy hands off me!”

That did it. She needed to be taught a fucking lesson. There was an old, broken down jeep nearby and I threw her up against it, pushing her there with my body. Ignoring her gasp of pain, I fisted a hand in her long hair and jerked her head back roughly, enough so that our eyes could meet.

“Give me anymore trouble and I’ll show you how filthy I can get.

The biker scene has lost its appeal...
By Stacey is Sassy (Stacey B-Reviews)
Lynch is the Wild Marauders motorcycle club president. The club is his life. His crew are his best mates, he makes heaps of money doing what he loves and he has plenty of sweetbutts to service him. He sees a chick on the side of the road with her car broken down and offers her help which she declines. This chick was hot and stuck in his mind after he left her. Every time he had sex with a sweetbutt after their meeting he pictures her face.

Kat meets a hot biker on the side of the road when her car breaks down. Her boring respectable lawyer boyfriend stays in the car while she gets hit on by the biker. This wakes her up to the fact that her boyfriend is a loser. She breaks up with loser and two weeks later gets dropped at the feet of the biker.

This story has action, suspense and intrigue. Lots of fighting between rival clubs which brings murder and mayhem to the club's door.

There were some pretty hot sexy times between the main characters and an obvious connection between them.

My reasons for the lower rating...I'm over bikers. It doesn't turn me on when they want to have public sex. I'm not impressed that every sentence spoken has at least one swear word, it gets monotonous. I don't like to think these women choose to degrade themselves by offering sex to be able to hang around. I don't think being the President's old lady is something to aspire to, it just puts a target on your back.

I have enjoyed books about motorcycle clubs, but for me they have lost their appeal. Maybe down the track the appeal will come back, but for now it's time for a break.

Has potential
By JJH
3 stars. I don't mind erotic books, but this is one of those books that I felt the sex scenes really overpowered the story. Maybe that is what the author was going for, however, I was actually really enjoying the plot. I really liked the characters themselves, the buildup to their relationship, all the crazy mc stuff, but all the overdone intimate scenes put a damper on it for me. I found some of the phrasing so over-the-top, it made the scenes seem ridiculous instead of "hot". I'm definitely not saying to get rid of the sex scenes. Just personally, I would prefer them to be turned down a little so the other stuff can shine through more. The action side was good, and I loved the h and H together. Just my preferences.

Aikido Library Essential
By Dr. Williams
Saito Morihiro was a teacher of martial aiki, and conveyed the presence of pre-war aikido better than any living person until his death a few years ago. While the photos are not the best (taken from the 16mm films of Saito; same ones later done in the 5-volume series), the explanation of hitoemi and basic training exercises are worth the price.
This is not the most "slick" instructional book out there, but for any serious aikidoka it's a worthwhile addition to the library and will become a useful reference that is timeless.

Much more readable and "in the trenches" than Volume One
By Virtualmonk
After spending a volume dwelling on all the events that took place to at last produce the American and National Leagues as we know them today, Seymour uses the second volume to at focus on the players, profiling the great ones (Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc.) as well as giving interesting factoids about pennant races, teams, managers and players. I'm about half way through and it's been a much faster read than Volume One.

Keep in mind, though, that while these are rightfully acclaimed histories of The Game, if you are looking for detailed recollections on a particular pennant race, team, etc., you will need to look elsewhere. This volume covers 1903-1930 in 492 pages. In addition, if you're hoping to use footnotes or endnotes to do deeper research or just to check the source material, you're out of luck. There are none.

Like An Old Friend.
By Mr. Joseph Edward Clark
I had first read this book during the early 70's when I was Still in my teens, because nostilgia has a way of destorting things this book was not quite as great as I remembered it to be. Nevertheless it is still great a book, for those of us who understand that in History while Wars,Summit Meetings and the like have (and should ) thier place, so should the more ordinary aspects, of our cultural life. The portions of this book that deal with Ty Cobb's insanity and racism Hal Chase's corruption, "Judge Landis's" overated qualties, and the fact that the 1919 World Series scandal was merely a means to an end, rather than the actual cause of the overthrow of The National Commission, for me anyway make for great reading, I would urge anyone intrested in American culture, or just loves baseball/nostilgia to purchase this book here.

I have enjoyed the stories of the old timers
By Robert V. Eby Jr.
I have been a baseball fan since 1972. I recently became interested in early baseball history. This is the second book I read. Very comprehensive. I have enjoyed the stories of the old timers, and how baseball worked back in the day.

Classic Manufacturing Technology Working Book [1989 ed]
By Prof David T Wright
This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. To help get an idea of what being a manufacturing engineer involves, prospective students should envision a dose of intense team & individual industry-based change projects, and striving globally competitive companies to add "seasoning" to these books. The broad `technology' contents are useful for industry veterans, consultants, and undergraduate students alike, as well as being a good starting point for researchers.
Over 1000 pages of richly detailed and illustrated yet concise contents span:
* materials properties- metals, behaviour & testing, properties, alloys, production of steels, non-ferrous production, plastics, ceramics, and composites.
* metal casting processes and equipment- fundamentals, processes, and design & economics.
*forming and shaping processes and equipment- rolling, forging, extrusion and drawing, sheet-metal forming, powder metallurgy, forming & shaping plastic & composites, forming & shaping ceramics & glass.
* material removal processes and machines- cutting, tolls & fluids, round-shape processes, various-shape processes, machine tools and economics, abrasive processes & operations, and non-traditional processes.
* joining processes and equipment- oxyfuel & arc & resistance welding, solid-state welding, metallurgy, brazing/soldering & mechanical joining processes.
* surface technology- characteristics & measurement, tribology, surface treatment, fabrication of microelectronics,
* common aspects of manufacturing- metrology, testing and quality assurance, human factors and safety.
* manufacturing in a competitive environment- automation, integrated systems, competition and economics.
The strengths include the vast amount of detail, illustrations, references and exercises to embed learning; broadness yet correctness of content; and many examples of industrial application and usefulness for industry. An updated version, with further additions on latest technologies, process control, and systems analysis/simulation & change management, would address the only weakness of the text (the section on competitive environment manufacturing). Thoroughly recommended as a reference and how-to book in manufacturing (suspect latest version even better!)

Very good manufacturing text
By Heinz Doufenschmirtz
I've taught a quarter-long Manufacturing Processes course out of this text (and its predecessor) for four years, and plan to continue using it. This text presents a great overview of a wide variety of processes, which is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. It also goes into reasonable depth with many processes. I do not attempt to cover the entire text in one quarter, however -- I use roughly half.

When asked on end-of-term evaluations whether they agreed with the statement, "The textbook was valuable in my learning experience," students consistently rated this text 4.1/5.0. The average score campus-wide for textbooks is 3.6/5.0. Anecdotally, the handful of students who actually bother reading the text come up to me and say, "It really is interesting and easy to read."

Yes, there are some errors which have been frustratingly carried over from the 5th edition, but you catch many of them with a first reading. These errors knock it down from 5- to 4-stars, but I'm still really happy with the text.

A poor choice in a textbook
By Vallan Sherrod
This book is not worth the money it costs. It hasn't been proofread from its last edition very well, still referring to old diagrams that aren't renumbered in their proper order. Also, most of the questions it asks for homework actually require that students get the answers online because they don't even address them in the book. Also, there are typos on several equations they report in the book. This can give the students confusion on which equation is actually correct and provides inconsistences in the math the authors exhibit in their examples. Upon looking at some solutions in the solutions manual, it expects students to somehow know they are not incorporating friction when the book doesn't even specify to do so. Overall, it does not seem that this book was well thought out. It seems that it was just put out quick in order to have a new edition from which to make money. I would not recommend this as a textbook for any class.

Good case examples, but it doesn't give you any insight to the oral questions they ask. Also, all the dosages and treatment options aren't necessary.

Brilliantly laid out…fabulous recipes for omnivores or herbivores!
By Linda Countertop
OMG-This book is brilliantly laid out. I am plant based and one of the things I hear from my omnivore friends is "I could never go Vegan!". The author, Kristy Turner, has resisted the trappings of recipes calling for manufactured ingredients like vegan cheese (such as Daiya) and fake meats, available in the "health" food stores and has taken a new, tasty, and healthful approach with her recipes…super refreshing in the world of plant based/vegan cookbooks. An example is the chapter on "Fake Foods Freak Me Out". My husband and I are in agreement with this. Why call it something it isn't and then try to make it taste like what it will never really taste like. As she states in her chapter heading "These recipes aren't trying to imitate a dish normally made with animal products. They are delicious meals that allow the plants to truly shine in their own right." The book has quality, engaging photos, the recipes are very thoughtfully created… and everything tastes really good. Her recipes can be served to anyone, omnivore or vegan. Thank you Krtisty Turner.

Funny, Innovative and above all, these recipes are attainable. A great read as well as a guide to vegan cooking!
By ReviewsonAmazon
I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years; live in a house with folks that all eat meat and LOVE all things cheese so never made the transition to Vegan - Friday nights after a long week in work are just too perfect when finished with cheese, wine and olives! So when I saw this book that not only looked fun but was written by someone who at one point professed herself as a "die hard cheese nerd" : my curiosity was piqued and I added it to my Christmas list!

I loved it from the moment I opened it and read it in book form which I would never typically do with a cookbook (I was also pretty hungry as my relatively new range decided to die on Christmas day leaving my food plans a little askew; so pretty food porn was the next best thing!). Things to love: no crazy tools required -blender; check, cutting board , check; I have those ...so was happy that I did not see pages requiring dehydrators and other gadgets I will probably never buy! Food I have heard of -stuff I can buy in a regular store -yet another plus! Pretty pics full of old faves - Mac N'Cheese, Pie, Mexican dishes, Asian dishes, spiced food, and yes, even cheese! This is hearty food that one can feed the family with and yet end up with clean plates and full bellies!

Today I made the broccoli chickpea soup as nutritional yeast is always on hand in my pantry, and it was delicious , warm and easy to make; the Creole Corn chowder is next on my list as well as some of the rather delicious looking desserts to serve friends and family over the holidays...only to announce after they were vegan !

This book is chock full of options! It begins with an interesting and easy to follow introduction covering basic ingredients and tools you will need to get started; followed by a basic how to guide on topics such as roasting garlic, making nut butters and cooking various grains. Then I really loved the guide to making condiments and components that can be added to dishes such as tofu sour cream and tempeh bacon. This is followed by a section built for cheese lovers full of ideas to fill that craving without dairy (have yet to try but will update when I do). The book then covers vegan options for beef lovers, pizza lowers, heck even those who adore chocolate! This book is designed to tempt the pallet of those with some big craving who as the title states "could never go vegan"!

Simply love this book and will use regularly. I will update this review as I tempt my meat loving household with these dishes!

Follow up: I seriously doubted I could give up cheese, or that vegan cheese would be that good but just tried making their cashew blue cheese and all I can say is why, I am a convert!

Gourmet recipes and approachable writing
By Shannon "Yiv"
This is an essential cookbook for anyone considering veganism but daunted by the idea of giving up non-vegan foods, and also makes a great addition to the cookbook shelf of anyone who already cooks vegan. All of Kristy's recipes are delicious and use "regular" ingredients - you won't need to hunt down a name-brand egg replacer or "nondairy cheese shreds". Occasionally Earth Balance or other vegan butter is suggested. I have successfully substituted coconut oil for vegan butter in all of those recipes so far, for anyone who wants to eschew the premade stuff.

I've made almost a dozen recipes: the homemade BBQ sauce; green pea guacamole with homemade tortilla chips; baked bean and cornbread casserole; flourless chocolate decadence cake; BBQ jackfruit fajitas; chickpea omelettes; BBQ baked tofu; sweet and sour cauliflower; loaded Mexican baked potatoes; rosemary lemon poundcake; and molasses-hazelnut chocolate mousse tart.

I have pretty much no negative feedback about any of those recipes. I made all of them as instructed and enjoyed every last one, particularly the baked bean casserole and the rosemary lemon poundcake. This isn't the kind of food that makes you think, "this tastes vegan". It just tastes awesome!

I also love the way the book is organized, with chapters each addressing a different common food-related concern about going vegan, like 'I couldn't live without cheese'. Kristy's writing is friendly, approachable and honest. She's probably also living proof that you can give up cheese, since she discusses how she used to be a fromagier. There are beautiful full-color pictures to accompany almost every recipe, which is another definite plus!

I wanted to note some critiques of the book, but I could really only think of one. Many of the recipes involve a lot of different steps and/or ingredients, especially because some recipe components are actually previous "base" recipes (e.g. the baked beans utilize the homemade BBQ sauce). This is definitely the wrong book for someone who wants to get in and out of the kitchen as soon as possible. But I believe that the results of these recipes are well worth the effort. Happy cooking!

The Animal Rights Debate, by Carl Cohen, Tom Regan

Do all animals have rights? Is it morally wrong to use mice or dogs in medical research, or rabbits and cows as food? How ought we resolve conflicts between the interests of humans and those of other animals? Philosophical inquiry is essential in addressing such questions; the answers given must have enormous practical importance. Here for the first time in the same volume, the animal rights debate is argued deeply and fully by the two most articulate and influential philosophers representing the opposing camps. Each makes his case in turn to the opposing case. The arguments meet head on: Are we humans morally justified in using animals as we do? A vexed and enduring controversy here receives its deepest and most eloquent exposition.

From Publishers Weekly
Regan (The Case for Animal Rights) is well known as a rights advocate, while Cohen (Naked Racial Preference: The Case Against Affirmative Action) is considered one of Regan's most ardent detractors. Although the two philosophy professors agree on some issues within the debate they both like animals, and believe animals feel pain, have emotions and deserve to be treated humanely on most others, they are diametrically opposed. Cohen (who teaches at the University of Michigan) believes animals do not have rights, and seeing no alternative to animal medical experimentation, finds it fully justified. Regan (who teaches at North Carolina State University) seeks the abolition of all animal experimentation, the fur industry and all commercial animal farming. Cohen feels justified being a "speciesist," whereas Regan considers speciesism "a moral prejudice" and wrong. Differences also manifest in the authors' styles of collegiality. Cohen calls Regan "Tom" and "Regan" and a friend despite adopting a condescending tone toward his arguments and pronouncing him a "zealot," a "fanatic" and "profoundly mistaken." Regan calls his opponent "Professor Cohen" or "Cohen." He is "disappointed" in some of Cohen's beliefs, believes Cohen's brief is "poorly reasoned and researched" and lists the failures he perceives in Cohen's argument, but remains civil throughout, bolstering his credibility. Though this fascinating treatise will primarily appeal to students and animal rights proponents, it might reach a much wider audience.

Review
A fascinating treatise . . . [that] appeals primarily to students and animal rights proponents. (Publishers Weekly)

The volume should be in the library of any school where philosophy is taught or animal research conducted, that is, in nearly every academic library. (CHOICE)

Tom Regan is without doubt the world's greatest defender of the rights of animals. Carl Cohen is one of Regan's notable critics. Here, between the pages of a single volume, are important new contributions from each of these authors. The resulting text isrequired reading for everyone interested in this critical issue.... (Gary Comstock, Iowa State University)

The book would make an ideal main text in a seminar on animals, ethics, and science for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in philosophy, biological sciences, experimental psychology, or the health-professions, including veterinary sciences. (Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association)

The book is enormously entertaining, and both writers succeed in making it clear and simple. (Radical Philosophy)

A tour de force of brilliant debate. No other 'seeing the issues from both sides' book comes close to this one in the sustained power of argumentation and in its thorough canvassing of the issues surrounding everything that might be said about the ethical treatment of animals. Quite simply, the best book of its kind. (Sidney Gendin, Eastern Michigan University)

a good text for an Ethics and Animals course
By Nathan Nobis
Regan's contribution is impressive. Regan's section is where to begin. He argues that whether a being has rights (and which rights it has) depends on its psychological capacities, not its biological species per se. Since babies and mentally challenged humans (who aren't rational or autonomous) have the right not to be eaten, worn, experimented on, chased down and shot and their heads hung on the wall, etc., so do non-human animals, since their psychologies are of comparable, if not often greater, levels. QED.
Objections to Regan concern his general theory of rights, NOT whether animals have them, if anyone does (many plausible moralities deny "rights" in the sense Regan defends).
According to Cohen, animals do not have rights because they animals cannot engage in moral deliberation, act on principles, and be moral agents.
Many humans cannot cannot engage in moral deliberation, act on principles, and be moral agents and hvae the capacities that Cohen seems to think are necessary for having rights. But, most of us think it would be wrong to experiment on them and kill them, even if doing so would greatly advance our interests. Cohen agrees. But since some humans lack these capacities yet have rights, this shows that these capacities are not necessary for rights. Cohen's denying rights to animals is arbitrary, a case of not treating beings with equal psychological capacities as equals: it is discrimination on the basis of species alone.
Cohen replies that objections like this "miss the point badly" because human infants, the senile, and the severely mentally disabled "have rights because they are human." He says that, "The critical distinction is one of kind." Earlier Cohen said that the "kind" needed for rights possession was a moral and psychological kind; now he says that the relevant kind is the biological kind Homo sapiens. No justification is given for this switch and why humans who (even permanently) lack moral capacities have rights yet animals do not.
Cohen's reply to this objection--the so called "argument from marginal cases"--is unsuccessful and his main argument that animals do not have rights fails. Appeals to thinkers ranging from Aquinas and Augustine to Marx and Lenin, as well as appeals to "immediate" and "certain" intuitions, do little to defend his view either. His repeated ad hominem attacks on those who disagree with him do not help either.
Cohen also argues that animals don't have rights because it's in our interest to use them. It's scientificaly dubious that using animals for food and research is in our best interest (both vegetarian diets and human-based research are superior for meeting our needs), but questions about morality shouldn't be decided by appeal to self-interest anyway. Cohen's case that animals do not have rights is a disappointment.

And the Winner Is...
By Rick Bogle
I began reading The Animal Rights Debate with the expectation that debate between two philosophy professors might truly illuminate the issues at hand in the continuing, in fact, increasing, discussion regarding the relationship between humans and other animals.
Tom Regan is well known for his sharp and careful analysis, and I expected anyone paired with him in a book of this nature to be similarly prepared for the discussion. Mr. Cohen did write as if he knew what he was writing about, but unfortunately for the reader, he did not.
From the first pages of Mr. Cohen's article, errors of fact are rife. He says, "The Department of Agriculture recently estimated the number of animals used in medical and pharmaceutical research to be about 1.6 million, of which the vast majority, approximately 90%, were rats, mice, and other rodents." (p 14)
In fact, mice, rats, and birds are specifically excluded from the statistics Mr. Cohen cites; the Department of Agriculture (USDA) figures do not include mice, rats, or birds because the Animal Welfare Act excludes these animals from coverage under the act. This is very well known by all observers. Industry estimates suggest that at least 30 million mice and rats are used annually.
He also claims that "every" lab using animals is subject to "frequent" inspection by the Department of Agriculture to insure the humane use of the animals in those labs. The USDA, in fact, estimates that at least 2000 labs in the US are not inspected because they use only mice, rats, or birds, and these animals are not counted as animals under U.S. law. Humane use is not at issue even during the inspections of the labs that do fall within the purview of the agency.
I was shocked by Mr. Cohen's lack of command of the basic facts regarding animals used in U.S. laboratories, and more so by his claim that he was presenting the facts.
As far as Mr. Cohen's philosophical arguments are concerned, aside from his factual errors, I found his claims to be a mix of circular reasoning: only humans have rights, animals aren't human, so animals can't have rights; bait and switch: he makes the correct claim that most animals used in labs are rodents, and then calls attention to polio, the investigation of which almost eliminated rhesus monkeys from India; demonizing: he goes out of his way to paint rats as the ugliest and meanest creatures imaginable, and other similarly suspect techniques used commonly to confuse an audience.
But, this book thrilled me nevertheless. The arguments put forth by Mr. Regan are straightforward, fact driven, and polite. His logic is impeccable and his conclusions inescapable.
It is at once gladdening to see the best that each side in the debate can muster clearly displays the fact that animals do have inherent rights. Indeed, based on the arguments presented in this book, the debate is over. It remains painful to realize that the essentially failed attempt by Mr. Cohen is nevertheless the weak excuse for the continuing daily massive exploitation of other animals by us. If you have an interest in seeing an opponent of animal rights get thoroughly trounced, then I think you will like this book. If you are looking for reasoned debate, unfortunately, the defenders of the status quo have yet to muster a meaningful and cogent argument.

Cohen needs to consult his logic text
By David K. Braden-Johnson
Cohen's sophomoric replies to Regan's claims for extending basic moral consideration to nonhuman animals makes a mockery of this debate (a surprising deficit, given Cohen's training and reputation as a logician). Regan, in contrast, is scholarly and thoughtful, though one suspects that his case for "animal rights" (and consequent absolutism) continues to faulter against the foundational assumption of the "equal inherent value of all subjects of a life" and concommitant rejection of all extrinsic (relational) ethical considerations. See M. Silliman, *Sentience and Sensibility,* for an value-incrementalist alternative to Regan's antiperfectionist unicriterialism.
