This book is a great overview to help the new homeowner be a little more savvy about maintaining your house. It starts out explaining why home maintenance is important, getting to know the house, and putting together a plan.

Sections include

We have been living in our current home for over 20 years but I purchased this book for my husband anyway as he is a big fan of the Carey Brothers. He absolutely loves it from the do it yourself cleaning solutions to the home maintence checklist. So whether you are a first time homeowner or have owned your home for 20 years like us this book is must have.

Band structure engineering

In solid state/condensed matter physics, there is somewhat of a gap between introductory books and research papers on actually doing cutting edge work in band theory. Singleton attempts to remedy that with a text aimed squarely at honours-level students (in the UK), which is equivalent to senior level undergrads in the US.
He starts with the simple Drude and Sommerfeld models. These are historically important, and also don't need much in the way of computation. They could not have, actually, since they were devised at a time (pre-1940s), when electronic computers were unavailable. Singleton then quickly moves to the tight-binding model, which leads directly into modern band structure.
From this, he shows how we get semiconductors and insulators. Then, how nowadays we can do better than nature. Instead of restricting ourselves to band structures of bulk compounds, we can synthesise heterostructures, and thus manipulate the resultant band structures in a quantitative fashion, giving novel and useful properties on a bulk scale.
This might also motivate some readers to do research into such new materials.

Pretty good introductory solid state physics book

This book is a good bridge between very abbreviated descriptions of solid state physics found in most EE semiconductor device books and a tome like Ashcroft and Mermin's standard Solid State Physics book. It is mainly descriptive and elementary (the Boltzmann transport equation is barely mentioned). I like it because the author often plainly says useful things like the effective masses of electrons and light holes are similar, or that the heavy hole masses are pretty much the same for common semiconductors. The coverage of optical properties is minimal, apparently by design since the book is part of a series (Optical Properties of Solids by Fox).

I found the appendices to be useful for references. The text and derivations in the main part are short on detail. So the main text is probably better suited as a quick guide reference for people that already have an understanding of the material. Or for those who really want to get a better understanding by working out all the derivations on their own.

After her son is born, she sinks into depression, allowing her mother-in-law to take over completely. Finally, she is manipulated into a "rest home" where she becomes zonked on antidepressants. Perfect Example Of A Top Notch Psychological Thriller

The Little House is a remarkable gem of a psychological thriller. It makes even the most normal, everyday events seem sinister and riveting.
The plot focuses on Ruth who is talked into starting a family by her husband and living down the road from his upper class parents in the country. Then the nightmare unfolds. The book is a masterpiece of claustrophobia as Ruth's in-laws intrude more and more into her life. All throughout the book I felt tense and unsettled - just as I love to be when I am reading a thriller. I could absolutely empathise with Ruth and as her situation got worse and worse I was routing for her all the way.
Ruth is a delightful, yet in some ways tragic character. She is a successful journalist and yet her past has meant that she is needy and desperately seeking love. She thinks she has found a family which she can belong to at long last in her in-laws but what she fails to realise is that they want to control her. The mother in-law, father in-law, and Ruth's husband Patrick are chillingly plausible and well developed. The beauty in this novel is that unlike in many other psychological thriller's these three characters are not evil, they truly believe they are doing the best for Ruth and themselves - even as they push her further and further towards the limits of her own sanity.
Overall The Little House is a fantastic study of relationships between a woman and her in-laws and how the ordinary things can lead someone to madness, and to do the most unspeakable things. The Little House's packs a hard, chilling punch, especially as the ending is so unexpected and compelling. I would recommend this book unreservedly.

This is a page-turner!!!

What a wonderfully written book! I was immersed in the lives of these well developed characters within minutes and couldn't stop reading until I'd reached the end in one sitting. This is an illuminating book for women. It illustrates the frightening results when a woman is unable or unwilling to set boundaries in her life. I was so affected by this book that I bought it for my newly married daughter and insisted she read it as an object lesson. I think most women will relate to the heroine of this book. The ending was electrifying and immensely satisfying!

WHAT A READ!!!!

I thought this book was wonderful.We used to live in England and it was so true to the way English folks are it brought back lots of memories. It held my attention until the last page. I found I could NOT make myself put it down. I became so angry with some of the characters I knew that it must be a well written book. When you get so invloved with a book you just want to shake some of the characters to me it means the author is doing a pretty good job of immersing you in her story. You will not be sorry you picked this book to read. I read the last 3 pages over and over and found myself thinking of the ending long after I had closed the the book. LOVED IT!!!!

Creek Indian History one of the best

Creek Indian History is one of the best books we have read. It is very informative. We have learned more from this book about our heritage and traditions than we thought possible. Just learning that the dead were buried under the floor of the home was fasinating. It's a book everyone wanting to know about the Creek Indians should read.

This is probably the most important book ever written about archaeology in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. If you're a Southeastern archaeologist, you must purchase this. I was so excited when they did a reprinting. Honestly, get it now before they all get beat up and it's impossible to find again.
